Redefining How We Treat Addiction
Introduction to Addiction Treatment
Addiction, which is now referred to as substance use disorder, is a complex disease of the brain and the body that involves compulsive drug and alcohol use despite continuing negative consequences. At our Camarillo treatment center we understand the complexities of addiction. We work with you to treat your addiction’s root causes and prepare you for a life in long-term recovery. The causes of addiction are a combination of psychological, behavioral, social, and biological factors. Researchers have found that genetics account for about half of the risk of developing an addiction. However, simply having a parent or other relatives who have substance use disorders does not condemn you to a life filled with addiction.
Like other diseases, your risk is also impacted by your choices, surroundings, and overall health. Just as your diet and exercise choices impact your chances of developing diseases such as diabetes or heart disease, your decision to use drugs and alcohol will increase your chances of developing an addiction. And just as other conditions change how your body functions, addiction changes how your brain functions.
Most addictive substances cause your brain to release the same chemicals naturally released when you engage in pleasurable everyday life activities. However, the amount released is higher, and continued use forces the brain to compensate. As the brain tries to balance itself, the effect of the drugs is decreased, which results in you needing more drugs to get the same high. At the same time, those daily life activities such as eating, drinking, and even having sex become less pleasurable. In the end, you find yourself focused on little else besides procuring and using drugs and alcohol, with even that bringing you little pleasure.
It is at that moment when you find yourself using more and more of the same drug just to feel “normal” that you may begin to think about seeking treatment. Whether your drug and alcohol started as an experiment gone awry or was compulsive from the start doesn’t matter. If drugs and alcohol have taken over your life, it’s time to seek treatment and break free. At our Ventura County drug treatment program, we understand what it’s like when you wake up one day and realize that all you have left are drugs and alcohol. You may not even know how you reached this point and that’s okay. We will meet you where you are and partner with you to create an individualized treatment plan to build your firm foundation in sobriety. You don’t have to know how to get sober or even how to live in recovery. All you have to do is want to do it. You may not even believe that you can do this. That’s okay too, because we believe that you can and we’ll help you believe that too.

The Altitude Recovery Difference
Types of Care at Our Ventura County
Our Camarillo drug treatment center staff will work with you to find the therapies and activities that best suit you as you create a sober life. We offer a wide range of traditional and holistic treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, reiki therapy, art therapy, yoga therapy, and more. Each therapy and activity will serve a purpose in examining how you became addicted, how you can live a sober life or both.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on current events rather than the past. The focus will be on developing coping skills and reducing stress. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a form of Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). DBT seeks to help you become aware of your thoughts and emotions through therapy sessions and activities that you can do outside of therapy. As your emotional awareness increases, you will work with your therapist to develop better coping strategies that are less destructive. During this time, you’ll learn how to better communicate with others.
Another form of therapy related to cognitive behavioral therapy is acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), which focuses on reshaping your perception of the hardships in your life to move forward. Combining these three therapies will help you examine your addiction and do the work that will help you live your life free from drugs and alcohol.
While traditional therapies are a cornerstone of the work you will do at our Camarillo addiction treatment center, we believe that alternative and holistic therapies are also essential to your recovery. Reiki therapy, a Japanese form of energy healing therapy, aims to balance your energy or life forces so that you can remain present and mindful. Over time, you have likely lost touch with your body. Yoga therapy seeks to help you integrate mind, body, and spirit in your approach to life. Art therapy allows you to create art as a way to express your thoughts and feelings through the creation of art. The creating may be in many different forms of mediums and might include working with clay, painting, creating a collage, or other pieces.
You will also participate in fun group activities that will enable you to see that you can have fun and find pleasure in sobriety. In active addiction, we spend our time trying to escape from our lives. In recovery, we strive to create a life that needs no escape. At our Ventura County drug treatment centers, we understand the importance of a multi-faceted approach that blends different therapies and activities to allow you to work through your addiction and rediscover yourself.
